The American Breast Cancer Foundation was a saving grace.
When I began to have concerns about my breasts, I figured I would go get a simple test. I learned there was nothing simple about getting a screening mammogram and that prices ranged wildly.
I found a place two hours away that could do the screening mammogram for $50. The result was dense breasts and I would need an ultrasound. Not only that, I would need a doctor’s appointment for a referral, plus the cost of the ultrasound, plus the cost of someone to read the ultrasound.
I was so upset and frustrated while also being afraid about whether something was wrong with me medically. Here comes in ABCF. I was so astonished. Christina with ABCF treated me so friendly and kindly. I was amazed.
I told her the concerns I had about the complexity of the process and the costs. She said I could apply for a grant. I figured I would not qualify because that’s where I fall in most things, making enough to not qualify for help, but not having enough for unexpected and high medical costs. I figured I would apply, despite low expectations.
I did a short, simple application online and then completed the application process over the phone with Christina. It was so, so soothing to be treated so kindly. Over the phone we talked about Trader Joe’s and other normal things. I didn’t feel like I was being scrutinized, I felt like I was talking to a friend.
To my surprise and delight, Christina, the person I can reach so easily and who was so friendly, also had decision making power! What?! No waiting for word from some unknown person? No waiting at all? She told me right then I qualify for $250 of assistance.
